Meet Tucker – our January Rafflebox Puppy!
Tucker came into our care in late December alongside his siblings (the solar system puppies) who were an accidental litter. Before arriving at the shelter, Tucker had experienced some seizure activity and was isolated from the other pups so he could be monitored (hence the non-solar system name).
Since arriving at the shelter, Tucker has not shown any signs of seizures, but we opted to run a bloodwork panel to see if there was any conclusive evidence that would have caused this previous seizure activity. While we were waiting for the diagnostic results, we started the search to find new homes for all the pups.
On Wednesday, we were notified that the results came back for Tucker, and they were not as we anticipated. His blood work shows that he has a possible liver shunt, meaning a portal vein that carries blood to the liver (where toxins and other byproducts are removed) has an abnormal connection.
With Tucker being a puppy, the blood work is not necessarily conclusive as a lot of things quickly change in their growing bodies.
As of Wednesday, Tucker has entered a medical hold with us so we can re-evaluate and run further testing in one month to see if there are any changes that could lead to a conclusive diagnosis.
Sadly, medical holds are something that happens quite often with shelter companions as we want to make sure they are set up with the best chance possible before moving into their new homes. In Tucker’s case, he will have at least an additional month spent at the shelter with treatments, care, and diagnostics that were an unplanned expense.
How do we manage these unexpected expenses? We’re currently hosting our first raffle of the year to help offset these costs. For as little as $5, you can help us find an answer for Tucker.

Our mission at Bide Awhile is to provide compassionate care, rehabilitation, and a safe haven for companion animals in need. We believe they deserve respect, dignity, and a chance for a happy life regardless of age, health status or breed. Funds raised will help us continue our mission and care for the hundreds of animals that enter our shelter each year.
The winner will be contacted to claim their prize.
