Meet Easel – our March Raffle Kitty! 

What started out as healing from a routine spay surgery quickly turned into a potential life-threatening emergency. 

Easel was one of three Art Supplies Kittens that came into our care at the end of January. Since their arrival everything was progressing as normal, they all had routine initial veterinary visits, they were added to the surgery schedule and all received routine surgeries. 

Coming back from the vet, they were as cuddly as ever and were quickly trying to win over every person they met. The day following the surgeries, one of our staff members noticed that Easel had a small bruise near her incision site. Thinking this could have been left from one of the clamps used in surgery, we opted to put her in a surgery suit to prevent licking and confined her to kennel rest to recover. 

We contacted our veterinary partners with a photo of the bruise and they asked to bring her in for a consultation where it was recommended to closely monitor for any change. Over the next couple days, a larger bruise began forming under Easel’s surgery site so we took her for a follow-up visit with our veterinarian and we could not believe what was found. 

An x-ray revealed that one of the interior sutures from the surgery had broken and Easel’s intestines had started to move through the opening causing a huge internal hernia. 

Easel was immediately taken into emergency surgery to move her intestines back into place and secure the opening that had formed. When she was released from observation and brought back to the shelter, she was placed on another kennel rest and confinement to ensure no further complications would arise. 

Sadly, the cost of surgery and medical care can quickly stack up. As a non-profit that is 100% community funded, we need your support to help us provide a second chance for animals in need.
